FastSCAN™ is an extremely fast and accurate device for capturing complex three dimensional surfaces. This allows animators to scan models and maquettes, translating this data in real-time into a full 3D graphical image which instantly appears on the computer screen. This process can also be used for computer gaming applications. FastSCAN has been used widely in the entertainment industry for character animation, toys, computer games, and feature films.
The FastSCAN Cobra™ is being used in this photo to scan the 1972 Star Wars artifacts for archiving. The FastSCAN Cobra was used in the Hanes® Jackie Goes Tagless commercial. "To generate the computer graphic stunt double the group digitized the actor using a Polhemus FastSCAN scanner to acquire 3D information for Chan's face and upper torso." CGW September 2003, pg. 62.
The scanner was also used by Weta Digital for The Lord of the Rings, scanning maquettes up to six feet tall. The FastSCAN appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Season 3, 'Denial'); was used to scan Will Smith for the Men In Black II music video production; and the FastSCAN Cobra was used in two episodes of CSI:NY in 2006.
