Over 50 Years of Experience

Over 50 years later, we remain true to our mission: Give our customers the power to break new ground through innovative, cost-effective enabling technologies for the real and virtual world.

Polhemus is known as the true pioneer and leader in the motion tracking industry, first introducing our proprietary electromagnetic technology in 1969. Although Polhemus motion tracking products are currently used in a broad range of applications, the initial product was developed for pilots, when we introduced head tracking for the military - which we still do today.

1969
Our Beginning

Following a distinguished 20+ year military career, William L “Bill” Polhemus sought out to further the science of navigation. Bill flew 64 combat missions in Korea, was an integral part of the B-58 test program, and served as a crew member on 5 world record setting flights - all as a navigator

In 1969, he founded Polhemus Navigation Sciences (now shortened to Polhemus) and the company was awarded an R&D contract focused on resolving airborne navigation challenges.

That same year, Bill’s focus on navigational tooling led to the invention of six degree of freedom motion tracking using electromagnetics.

1982
Commercial Operations Begin

By the early eighties, Polhemus shifted gears from the R&D contracts of the formative business years and began selling commercial off-the-shelf motion tracking systems. The renowned 3Space family of products was introduced and brought precision motion tracking capabilities to new and growing market segments.

2018
Introducing Viper

In 2018, Polhemus once again disrupted the EM tracking industry with the introduction of VIPER. With ultra-low latency rates and real time motion tracking, VIPER reset the standard in motion tracking as the most accurate electromagnetic tracker on the market. Users can track up to 16 sensors and scale up their sources – increasing their tracking range while maintaining data integrity.

For more information, see our VIPER product page here.

Today
Where We Are Now

Today, we carry on that legacy and continue expanding into new and growing markets requiring precision motion tracking. Innovation remains one of our biggest values as we strive to develop new features and technological advancements. We continue to lead in the military and medical industries as we advance to the future.

what clients say

Polhemus motion tracking technology is able to produce repeatable and reliable results--which is critical in obtaining the necessary data.

Dr. Howard Poizner
World Renowned Neuroscientist, Poizner Lab

G4 is really remarkable, in front of any other device that we experienced until now. It’s really a great product that definitely surpasses all others in its class.

Roberto Furlan
Managing Director, Khymeia

A great advantage of the PATRIOT tracking system used in SEP (SimSurgery Educational Platform is a customer product) is that it measures the position and orientation of the free instruments without having the instruments anchored in a mechanical measurement system. This feature makes the simulator user interface very flexible and allows the user to freely select an instrument port. As a consequence, the system can be used to simulate scenarios with any port configurations, including single incision laparoscopic surgery.

We tested dozens of technologies, but only Polhemus gave us consistent, plug-and-play performance and the ability to capture even the tiniest instrument movements with sub-millimeter accuracy.
