Virtual Reality: AR & VR Motion Tracking—Preferred by Professionals

Augmented reality and virtual reality can only truly deliver a realistic experience when the right motion tracking hardware is used. This is especially true when it comes to professional AR/VR environments, such as medical applications, manufacturing, and even (LBE) Location-Based Entertainment applications. Polhemus offers the highest fidelity electromagnetic motion tracking systems for AR and VR.

MOTION TRACKING WITHOUT THE USE OF CAMERAS

Polhemus utilizes the power of AC electromagnetics. Due to this, we can track the movement of multiple people or objects within the same space without the use of any cameras. This means there are no special lighting conditions, and no line-of-sight is needed. We can seamlessly track head and body movement, hands and fingers, hand controllers, and other types of objects.

Sensors are Embeddable

Because we don’t use cameras, our 6DOF sensors are completely embeddable. That means you can insert our sensors into your custom form factor. For example, track the precise movement of a dental tool, the subtle movements of an ultrasound wand, a manufacturing tool, or embed the sensors in all types of handheld controllers. We can track the head movement of multiple people in a small or large space.

Attach one of our sensors to an HMD (Head Mounted Display) to eliminate issues with orientation head tracking. For the most realistic AR/VR experience, fully embed our 6DOF sensors; you won’t even know they’re there, yet still achieve the uninterrupted tracking and sub-millimeter accuracy Polhemus is known for.

Latency Matters

Unlike high-latency tracking solutions, Polhemus proprietary motion tracking technology delivers a smooth tracking experience, with ultra-low lag time, translating to a truly immersive and realistic experience for the user.

Industrial Grade Hardware

Our motion tracking hardware is robust, so robust it’s been the top choice for pilot head tracking for years, both in simulators and on live aircraft. With an ability to operate in extreme environmental conditions, coupled with an impressive MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) rate, our tracking hardware is preferred by professionals around the globe. After 40 years, we’ve paved the way for virtual reality motion tracking in multiple industries, including medical, research, and civil defense applications, and we are proud to be called The Motion Tracking Experts.™

Quick, Easy Set Up

Polhemus systems are easy to use. Setup once and start tracking. There’s no need to re-calibrate, as with other types of systems. We offer a wide variety of motion tracking systems with a user-friendly set up, including fully wireless systems; see one of our tracking systems set up in under three minutes.

What's Your Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality Application? We love a challenge.

Motion Tracking Research Studies

Polhemus set the gold standard in motion tracking and has continued to meet that standard and raise the bar for over 50 years. It's why we're the preferred choice for top researchers from around the globe. Below is a sample of research studies using various motion tracking products.

  • How does a partner’s motor variability affect joint action?
Individuals involved in a joint action selectively rely on either their own or their partner’s variability (or both) for benefitting individual and joint action performance, depending on the predictability of the partner’ movements. A Polhemus G4 system was used in capturing movement to reach this conclusion.

  • FreeD – A Freehand Digital Sculpting Tool
A Polhemus FASTRAK® was used for motion estimation in developing The FreeD, a hand-held, digitally controlled, milling device. The system is guided and monitored by a computer while preserving the maker’s freedom to sculpt and carve, and to manipulate the work in many creative ways. Relying on a predesigned 3D model, the computer gets into action only when the milling bit risks the object’s integrity, by slowing down the spindle’s speed or by drawing back the shaft, while the rest of the time it allows complete gestural freedom.

  • Correlation between Symphesis Pubis’ Opening and SIJ’s Opening During Open Book Injury
FASTRAK® was used to measure the relative positions and orientations of the sacrum, right and left ilia. Careful dissection was conducted in order to isolate the pelvic ring and to remove all excessive muscles beyond the L5 level while keeping intact the ligamentous structures that provide stability to the pelvic ring.

About Electromagnetics

Electromagnetic Tracking 6DOF: Reliable Data, Repeatable Results

Polhemus is known for its award-winning, proprietary technology, AC (alternating current) electromagnetic tracking. Our technology is able to track a wide variety of objects, as well as people, by attaching small and lightweight sensors or embedding them within an object.

Polhemus technology deliver true 6DOF (Degrees-Of-Freedom) because both position and orientation are measured natively to the tracking technology and no hybrid data calculations are needed. The person or object's position is tracked within X, Y and Z coordinates of a space, as well as the object's orientation, otherwise known as yaw, pitch and roll. Our technology delivers reliable data, with repeatable results.

Our magnetic motion tracking sensors are fully embeddable. Even when the sensors are completely covered, they track position and orientation seamlessly.

Benefits

You can embed Polhemus sensors inside a custom form factor, which makes it the top choice for many training and simulation applications. The source, or transmitter, can also be embedded or covered and tracking accuracy is fully maintained. Our AC electromagnetics deliver a longer tracking range than similar competing technologies, and operate at lower power levels.

Additionally, it offers the best signal-to-noise ratios and multiple tracking systems can be used in the same environment, without cross-talk interference. Most Polhemus electromagnetic motion tracking systems are scalable so you can increase your tracking area simply by adding additional tracker components.

How It Works

Sometimes when we demonstrate our technology, we get asked, “How is it tracking?” It’s not magic, but it is proprietary—it’s the power of tuned electromagnetic fields and many years of patented development.

Polhemus motion tracking systems utilize a source that acts as a transmitter, which emits an electromagnetic dipole field, (as shown in the image above). The size of the field varies, depending on the size of the source used; the larger the magnetic field, the larger the tracking range, or coverage area.

Easy Set Up and Portable

Polhemus tracking systems can be set up quickly and easily. You can tailor the setting to meet your application needs or when your environment changes, and the systems are portable from room-to-room.

The placement of the source is flexible; mount the source on the ceiling for one application, set it up on a tripod, or bury the source underground for a different application. With flexibility in the set up, you are in control of adapting the tracking technology to your environment.

Because no cameras are used with Polhemus technology, a line-of-sight is not necessary for continuous tracking, and Polhemus technology can be used in complete darkness.

No Line-of-Sight--No Problem. No Drift. And No Data Interrupution.

With Polhemus electromagnetics, there are no cameras to align, no special lighting required, and you don’t need to be in a field of view. Most importantly, there is no lost data. That means when you and your project are on, our technology is on--continuously tracking without any data interruption due to line-of-sight occlusions associated with camera technologies.

Without this limitation, we have the ability to track through people and most walls. Drift (error in tracking output over time) is never an issue, as with inertial technologies because Polhemus technology is solid-state. There are no MEMS, Gyros, Accelerometers or Magnetometers involved so there is never a need to correct data due to drift.

Polhemus is the genesis of all magnetic tracking. Our proprietary technology is specialized and focused on innovative and affordable tracking solutions that enable our customers to break new ground within their fields of expertise.

Our technology powers applications in a wide variety of markets, catering to healthcare, military, and in countless research areas.

Why Magnetic Tracking?

Magnetic motion tracking clearly has undisputed advantages over other tracking models. Polhemus uses proprietary AC electromagnetic tracking technology because of the advantages it offers over pulsed DC magnetic tracking. Polhemus originated the DC concept but elected not to purse it because of overall performance penalties. Some of the strengths of Polhemus Magnetic Tracking are listed below:

  • No LOS (Line-of-Sight) optical occlusion constraints as you would see in optical tracking
  • No acoustic constraints as would be seen in DC Magnetic or Ultrasonic Tracking
  • No IR or thermal limitations typically associated with lens-based systems
  • No drift characteristics as would be seen in tracking system using inertial gyros – Polhemus provides repeatable results every time
  • Fast – Polhemus LIBERTY™ has a 240Hz update rate for all sensors running simultaneously
  • 6 Degree-Of-Freedom measurements (x, y, z; yaw, pitch, roll) is native to our technology
  • Enables real-time measurement of trainee orientation
  • Measurement accuracy is precise and repeatable
  • No user calibration is required in most environments
  • Does not require RF transmission regulatory exception in the US and elsewhere
  • Does not require scrutiny of wideband RF interference impact by spectrum authority

Applications

Head Tracking
Polhemus pioneered the original electromagnetic head tracking in the late 1960’s and has advanced the technology in tracking excellence ever since. Today’s magnetic tracking systems are nothing like those of the past – they are the absolute best trackers available and offer the clear advantage over emerging hybrid technologies which attempt to blend outputs more than one singularly limited tracking reference to compile a synthetic position and orientation solution.  Polhemus magnetic innovations are light-years ahead of even the best optical inertial hybrid trackers.  We are proud to offer our customers the low risk, high accuracy, fully day/night compatible helmet tracking solution with large head box coverage, minimal cockpit mounted equipment, no line-of-sight limitations and an ultra small, lightweight and embeddable helmet sensor.

Polhemus is proud to have received the prestigious Innovation Award within the Top Training and Simulation Companies selected by Military Training Technology magazine in 2008, 2009 and 2012. The list of top training and simulation companies is selected from around the world. Polhemus' latest head/helmet tracker, SCOUT, offers unprecedented ease of integration, accuracy, and simplicity for both real and simulated aircraft cockpits and ground vehicles.  Fielded and flying on A-10, F-16 and C-130 aircraft, the SCOUT is our very best.

Available for flying rotary and fixed wing aircraft AND simulators; our intent is to offer customers the edge in lightweight wearable motion tracking technology where requirements may involve tracking a pilot’s head for accurate weapons cueing and control; slewing a gimbaled sensor pod on the latest ground or air based vehicle; cueing a remote weapons station on a drone; and countless other scenarios involving advantages with simple and real-world man/machine interfacing. Whether it be simulated training or real-world fighting vehicles, Polhemus can provide the accurate tracking sensor for success.

Soldier Tracking

Soldiers in training wear Polhemus 6 Degree-of-Freedom tetherless motion trackers as a natural human behavior input device to the simulated scenario. For example, a small and lightweight tracker is worn on the head to track line-of-sight and head position or worn on the body to track body position and posture. High precision embeddable track sensors provide the technical position and orientation inputs the training system needs to determine which way and in which direction simulated military equipment is being aimed and used.  Add a sensor to the soldier and track heading and if body posture (standing, crawling, crouching; or moving left, right, forward or back). The effect is the soldier trains more naturally and with realistic freedom of movement – eliminating negative training caused by button pressing and joystick controllers within some training simulations.

Eye Tracking

Used by the United States Air Force for pilot training, VisionTrak™ is the standard in eye tracking excellence and the leader in versatility. Polhemus works with ISCAN, Inc., of Burlington, Massachusetts, to offer two primary platforms that are custom configurable to meet specialized requirements. Both platforms: the lightweight, head-mounted, version and the completely non-contact desktop remote eye-tracker are proven components to training, simulation, and real-world studies.

VisionTrak standard software is user friendly and powerful. Enhanced capabilities and features can also be utilized with optional software modules designed to simplify analytical tasks without limiting access to all of the raw data you may want. Point-of-regard analysis, raw point-of-regard data, areas of eye(s) fixation, fixation times, blink rate, scan path, pupil size, head and eye vector tracking, and much more can all be obtained with VisionTrak and available options.

In the 1990’s, we built upon our reputable legacy of motion tracking and expanded our product line--successfully adding eye tracking and 3D laser scanning to our portfolio. These additions paved the way for entering new markets, and Polhemus became known more broadly as the trusted, reliable source for motion measurement tracking technology.

With this expansion, Polhemus evolved and focused efforts in the Research and Technology, Health Care, and Military markets. Over the years, one thing has remained the same—an ability to innovate and produce new solutions in high-fidelity motion measurement tracking.

Position or Orientation? Yes.

Our technology is unique, as it measures both position and orientation natively--providing you with full six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) motion tracking without post-processing of data to derive missing measurements. The data never gets "lost" because a line-of-sight was obstructed. There are no cameras involved. And there's no drift, as with inertial technology.

We supply motion tracking to a wide breadth of innovations around the world, catering to a broad range of customers with a variety of needs. Our products can be found in an array of applications including: biomechanics, virtual reality, training simulators, image guided surgery, orthotics and prosthetics—and military guidance systems—to name just a few.
